Arrival · 到着

“The city glowed like a Petri dish full of promises.”

「この街は、約束で満ちたシャーレのように輝いていた。」

Kenji steps off the train in The City.

Everything is new, overwhelming, beautiful.

He’s left behind his old life—the corporate cultivation facility, the endless cycles, the exhaustion.

He doesn’t know anyone.

He doesn’t know what comes next.

But for the first time in years, he feels something like hope.

ケンジはこの街で電車を降りた。

すべてが新しく、圧倒的で、美しかった。

古い生活は置いてきた——企業の栽培施設、終わりのないサイクル、そして疲労。

誰も知らない。

次に何が来るかもわからない。

でも、何年かぶりに、希望のようなものを感じていた。

When a spore lands in a new place, it doesn’t know if the substrate will welcome it. It sends out a single hypha—a thread of hope—and waits to see what connects.

Cultivated in Japan for over 1,000 years. One of the most popular edible mushrooms in the world.

This one is ours, started as a grocery store mushroom from Aeon. Cut, plated on January 29, 2026 in the Studio.

日本では1,000年以上にわたって栽培されてきた、世界で最も人気のある食用キノコの一つ。

これは私たちの椎茸です。イオンで買った椎茸から始めました。2026年1月29日、スタジオにてカット、寒天培地ばいちにプレーティング。

Chapter 2 · 第2話

First Contact · 最初の出会い

“The corner by the substrate warehouse smelled like possibility.”

「基質倉庫の角は、可能性の匂いがした。」

Kenji discovers The Decomposers on his morning walk.

Biggie Caps, D-O-Double-Gill, and 2Spore. Three black oyster mushrooms who trade spawn bags by day and drop beats by night. They’re breakdancers, freestylers, and the chillest fungi you’ll ever meet in a Petri dish. Part of the East-West Spore Collective.

Their energy is infectious. They don’t know Kenji, but they nod at him like he belongs. It’s the first time anyone in the City has acknowledged him.

ケンジは朝の散歩でザ・ディコンポーザーズに出会った。

ビギー・キャップス、Ｄ・Ｏ・ダブルギル、そして２スポア。昼はスポーンバッグを売り、夜はビートを落とす三匹のクロヒラタケ。ブレイクダンサーでフリースタイラー、シャーレの中で出会える一番クールな菌類。イースト・ウエスト・スポア・コレクティブのメンバー。

あのエネルギーは、感染するみたいだった。ケンジのことなんか知らないのに、まるで仲間みたいに頷いてくれた。この街で誰かに存在を認められたのは、これが初めてだった。

Japan is one of the world’s largest producers of oyster mushrooms. They thrive easily, growing thick visible webs that reach out and connect with whatever is around them.

This one is ours, grown from a culture we brought from Europe. Transplanted to agar on February 4, 2026 in the Studio. Day 16.

日本は世界有数のヒラタケ生産国である。よく育ち、太く目に見える菌糸きんしの網を広げ、周囲にあるものと繋がっていく。

これは私たちのシモフリヒラタケです。ヨーロッパから持ってきた培養ばいよう株から育てました。本年2月4日、スタジオにて寒天培地ばいちに移植。培養ばいよう16日目。

Chapter 3 · 第3話

Unwelcome · 歓迎されざる者

“Belonging isn’t automatic. New arrivals face suspicion. But first impressions can change.”

「居場所は、自動的には与えられない。新参者は疑いの目で見られる。だが、第一印象は変えられる。」

Kenji stops by FungiMart for some late-night groceries. Onigiri, maybe a coffee. Just a normal evening for a shiitake trying to start over in a new city.

But outside, behind the trash cans, someone is watching. Three shadows, whispering.

The Caps have noticed Kenji. Word travels fast in the fungal network: a former spore banker, educated, professional. They see him as a threat to their (imagined) territory. Kenji doesn’t know any of this—yet.

ケンジは夜遅く、ファンギマートに寄った。おにぎり、たぶんコーヒーも。新しい街でやり直そうとしているシイタケの、ただの夜。

だが外では、ゴミ箱の裏で、誰かが見ている。三つの影、ひそひそ声。

ザ・キャップスがケンジに目をつけた。菌糸きんしネットワークで噂は早い——元胞子ほうしバンカー、高学歴、プロ。自分たちの（妄想上の）ナワバリへの脅威とみなしている。ケンジはまだ何も知らない——今のところは。

The answer determines whether they merge or fight for territory.

「二つの菌糸きんしネットワークが出会うと、互いを試す。化学信号が行き交う。味方か、競争相手か？その答えが、融合ゆうごうするか、ナワバリを争うかを決めるのである。」

Shiitake · Lentinula edodes · 椎茸 — Day 28

Shiitake mycelium grows slowly compared to other species, but it builds dense, resilient networks. As it matures, the mycelium thickens and changes colour — a sign it is settling in.

This is the same shiitake from Episode 1. Compare the two photos — 17 days apart. Day 28.

椎茸の菌糸きんしは他の種に比べて成長が遅いが、密で丈夫なネットワークを築く。成熟するにつれ、菌糸きんしは太くなり色が変わる……定着しつつある証あかしだ。

第1話と同じ椎茸、ケンジです。二枚の写真を見比べてください……17日間の差。培養ばいよう28日目。

Chapter 4 · 第4話

Confrontation · 対峙

“Conflict often comes from fear. Honesty can defuse it.”

「争いの多くは、恐れから生まれる。正直さが、それを解くこともある。」

The Caps corner Kenji. Boss stands in the middle, perfecting his evil glare. It comes off more like chronic indigestion.

To his right is Gills, who talks faster than his mycelium grows, and that’s saying something. On the left stands Mokuba, who has a heart of gold and a brain of sawdust.

The whole act is meant to be intimidating, but it’s mostly awkward.

Kenji, too tired to be scared, just sighs. “I’m not here to take anything from anyone. I just want to start over.”

The Caps don’t know how to respond.

ザ・キャップスがケンジを囲んだ。真ん中にボス、悪の睨みを完成させようとしている。どちらかというと慢性的な胃もたれに見える。

右にギルズ——菌糸きんしが伸びるより速く喋る、それはかなりのものだ。左にモクバ——心は金、脳みそはおがくず。

全体として威圧のつもりだが、ほぼ気まずい。

ケンジは怖がるには疲れすぎていて、ただため息をついた。「誰からも何も奪いに来たんじゃない。ただ、やり直したいだけなんだ。」

ザ・キャップスは返す言葉が見つからなかった。

Hiratake · Pleurotus ostreatus · ヒラタケ — Day 30

Oyster mushrooms are among the few carnivorous fungi. When nitrogen is scarce, their mycelium secretes toxins to paralyze and digest nematodes, then absorbs them.

This one is ours, grown from a culture we brought from the Netherlands, already months old when it arrived. Plated on February 4, 2026 in the Studio. Day 30.

ヒラタケは数少ない肉食性にくしょくせいの菌類きんるいの一つだ。窒素ちっそが不足すると、菌糸きんしは毒素を分泌ぶんぴつして線虫せんちゅうを麻痺まひさせ、消化・吸収してしまう。

これは私たちのヒラタケです。オランダから持ってきた培養ばいよう株から育てました。到着した時点ですでに数ヶ月成長していたものです。2026年2月4日、スタジオにて寒天培地ばいちに移植。培養ばいよう30日目。

Chapter 5 · 第5話

The Network · ネットワーク

“Power structures exist. Understanding them isn’t the same as submitting to them.”

「権力構造は存在する。理解することと、屈服することは違う。」

Kenji learns about the real power structure: CAPS LOCK. The king oyster who runs the mycelial underworld.

The Decomposers explain it: “Caps Lock built his empire from a single spore. Now he controls the supply chains, the growing operations, and has more connections than a fairy ring formation. He’s the fungus among us that everyone whispers about but nobody crosses. The Caps think they’re looking tough? Caps Lock invented that look. Then patented it. Then franchised it to every mushroom gang in three prefectures.”

Kenji wonders if he needs to pay respects. The Decomposers shrug. “He knows you’re here. If he wanted something, you’d know.”

ケンジは本当の権力構造を知る——キャップス・ロック。菌糸きんしの裏社会を仕切るエリンギ。

ザ・ディコンポーザーズがさらっと説明してくれた。「元締めは胞子一つから帝国を築いたんすよ。今じゃサプライチェーンも栽培オペレーションも全部仕切ってて、フェアリーリングより繋がりが多いっしょ。みんなが噂するけど誰も逆らわない、そういうキノコ。ザ・キャップスがイカつい顔してるつもり？あの顔、元締めが発明したんすよ。んで特許取って。んでフランチャイズにして三つの県のキノコギャングに売ったっしょ。」

ケンジは親分に挨拶に行くべきか迷った。ザ・ディコンポーザーズは肩をすくめた。「お前がいるの、もう知ってるっしょ。何か用があったら、わかるから。」

In forests, certain trees become ‘mother trees’—central hubs in the mycelial network that distribute resources to younger, weaker trees.

Power in nature isn’t always predatory. Sometimes it’s… parental.

「森には『母樹ぼじゅ』と呼ばれる木がある——菌糸ネットワークの中心となり、若く弱い木々に資源を分配するハブである。自然界の力は、常に捕食的とは限らない。時にそれは……親のようなものなのである。」

Yamabushitake · Hericium erinaceus · ヤマブシタケ — Day 37

Lion’s mane is the only known edible fungus that stimulates nerve growth factor in the brain. Its compounds promote the growth of new neural connections. A mushroom that does not just feed the body, but builds the mind.

This one traveled with us from home. Transplanted to fresh agar on February 3, 2026 in the Studio. Day 37. Kenji needs some help. Next chapter, the Lion’s Mane has something to say.

ヤマブシタケは、脳内で神経の成長を助けることが知られている唯一の食用菌類きんるいだ。その成分は、新たな神経のつながりを増やす。体を養うだけでなく、精神を育てるキノコだ。

これは私たちと故郷から旅をともにしてきた一株です。本年2月3日、スタジオにて新しい寒天培地ばいちに移植。培養ばいよう37日目。ケンジには助けが必要だ。次の話で、ヤマブシタケが語りかける。

Chapter 6 · 第6話

The Forest · 森

“Wisdom exists outside mainstream structures. Indigenous and traditional knowledge offers perspectives that modern life has forgotten.”

「知恵は主流の外にも存在する。先住民と伝統の知は、現代が忘れた視点を与えてくれる。」

Kenji needs perspective. The whole thing with Caps Lock and The Caps was just… too much.

The Decomposers tell him about Paws—the lion’s mane who showed up in the city years ago, but decided society was too rigid for proper fruiting, and moved to the forest. “He’s weird, but he knows things. Spends his days puffing spores into the wind like he’s hotboxing the entire forest, hanging out with the moss that covers his log. It’s his best friend. Doesn’t speak at all but it’s great company.”

Kenji decides to visit him.

ケンジには新しい視点が必要だった。親分にザ・キャップス……全部が多すぎた。

ザ・ディコンポーザーズがパウズのことを教えてくれた——何年も前に街に来たけど、社会が窮屈すぎてまともに子実体しじつたいも出せないって森に行ったヤマブシタケ。「あいつ変わってるけど、いろいろ知ってるっしょ。毎日風に胞子ふかして、森ごとモクモクにしてるみたいな。丸太のコケとつるんでて、そいつが親友。一言も喋んないけど最高の相棒っしょ。」

ケンジは会いに行くことにした。

Voices of the Forest · 森の声

“You can only grow into someone new.”

「おぬしは、新しい自分にしか成れぬのじゃ。」

“You can only grow into someone new. And growth requires connection: to the substrate beneath you, to the air around you, to every living thing that shares your space.

In the old days, people here understood this. They knew that every being in the forest—every tree, every mushroom, every creature—carries a spirit worth honoring.

We’re not separate from the network. We are the network.”

「おぬしは、新しい自分にしか成れぬのじゃ。そして成長にはのう、おぬしの下にある基質、おぬしの周りの空気、おぬしと空間を分かち合うすべての命とのつながりが要るのじゃ。

昔、ここの人々は、それを知っておった。森のすべての存在——木も、茸も、生き物も——には、敬うべき魂が宿っていると知っておったのじゃ。

わしらはネットワークと別のものではない。わしらがネットワークそのものなのじゃ。」

Lion’s mane grows on hardwood trees, often after injury or death. It appears where something has ended, and transforms that ending into medicine.

A mushroom that heals minds.

「ヤマブシタケは広葉樹に生える……傷ついた後、あるいは死んだ後に。何かが終わった場所に現れ、その終わりを薬に変える。心を癒すキノコ……なのである。」

Chapter 7 · 第7話

The Audience · 謁見

“Communities require contribution. Taking without giving breaks the network.”

「共同体には貢献が必要だ。奪うだけで与えなければ、ネットワークは壊れる。」

A message arrives: Caps Lock wants to meet. Kenji is nervous, but the meeting isn’t what he expected. Caps Lock doesn’t threaten. He asks questions. Where did Kenji come from? Why did he leave? What does he want?

Kenji answers honestly. Caps Lock nods slowly. “This city has room for those who contribute to the network. Just… don’t take without giving.”

It’s not friendship. But it’s not hostility either.

伝言が届いた——キャップス・ロックが会いたがっている。ケンジは緊張した。だが、会見は予想とは違った。親分は脅さない。質問する。どこから来た？なぜ出た？何が望みだ？

ケンジは正直に答えた。親分はゆっくり頷いた。「この街には、ネットワークに貢献する者の居場所がある。ただ……奪うだけで返さないのは、ナシだぜ。」

友情ではない。だが敵意でもなかった。

Caps Lock isn’t just about power: he’s about balance.

「菌糸ネットワークは互恵ごけいで動いている。奪うだけで与えない木は、やがて切り離される。ネットワークは覚えているのだ。キャップス・ロックの本質は、力ではない——均衡きんこうなのである。」

Eringi · Pleurotus eryngii · エリンギ — Day 62

In the wild, eringi grows only on the dying roots of specific host plants — it cannot fruit without them. Remove that dependency, and something changes. In cultivation it thrives on almost anything, dominates, and never looks back. It no longer needs the old arrangement. It became the arrangement.

野生のエリンギは、特定の宿主植物の枯れた根にしか生えない——それなしでは実を結べない。その依存を断ち切ると、何かが変わる。栽培下では何にでも育ち、支配し、振り返らない。もはや古い取り決めは必要ない。自らが取り決めになった。

Belonging · 居場所

“Life’s too short to stress the small substrate.”

It wasn’t friendship. It wasn’t a plan. It was a corner, a beat, and someone finally laughing.

「人生は短い。小さな基質にこだわってる場合じゃない。」

友情でも計画でもなかった。角と、ビートと、ようやく笑えた誰か。
